Celebrate International Open Access Week 2022 by joining us for a panel discussion featuring UAB faculty who publish open access (OA). The panelists will discuss why they opted for OA over the traditional publishing route. This year’s theme, Open for Climate Justice, brings attention to the role OA publishing can play in the fight to combat climate change. After the panelists respond to questions posed by the moderator there will be time for questions from the audience. This event is sponsored by the UAB Libraries Office of Scholarly Communication.

Panelists

James McClintock, PhD
Endowed University Professor of Polar and Marine Biology, Department of Biology, UAB College of Arts and Sciences 

Dr. McClintock received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz (1978) and his doctoral degree from the University of South Florida (1984).  His expertise on the ecological impacts of climate change and ocean acidification on marine life of the Antarctic Peninsula has garnered numerous invited lectures and he writes in the popular literature on this timely topic.  His book Lost Antarctica: Adventures in a Disappearing Land (Palgrave/MacMillan) was released in September 2012.

Steven Howard, PhD
Associate Professor, Department of Health Services Administration, UAB School of Health Professions

Dr. Howard’s research interest is innovation in healthcare delivery and payment, particularly with respect to chronic disease, value-based care and alternative payment models.  A native of rural southern Oregon, he received an MBA from the University of Oregon, and after about 10 years of industry experience, earned his PhD from Oregon State University.  Steven also lived 12 years in Wisconsin where he met and married his wife (both are dairy farm kids) and graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire.

Lisa McCormick, DrPH, MPH
Professor, Department of Environmental Health Sciences, UAB School of Public Health

Dr. McCormick is the Director of the Alabama Regional Center for Infection Prevention and Control, the Lead Evaluator for the Region IV Public Health Training Center, Director of the Research Education Core for the UAB CounterACT Research Center of Excellence in Arsenicals, Director of the Research Experience Training Coordination Core for the UAB Superfund Research Center, and Co-Director of the AL K-12 COVID-19 Screen Testing Program. Dr. McCormick's research and scholarship focus on program evaluation, training outcomes, and public health preparedness.

Chad Petit, PhD
Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, UAB Heersink School of Medicine

Dr. Petit is a native of Hahnville, LA, a small town outside of New Orleans. He received bachelor's degrees in biochemistry, molecular biology, and chemistry from LSU in 2001. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. in 2005, also from LSU where he studied the SARS coronavirus. From 2006-2012, he studied biophysics as a postdoc at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the faculty at UAB in 2012 in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. He is now an associate professor whose research program focuses on using structural and biophysical techniques to identify host-pathogen interactions for influenza and SARS-CoV-2.
