Did you know that October is National Medical Librarians Month? In recognition of this, the UAB Libraries are planning an event to stimulate curiosity and invite conversation. We are hosting a Movie & Conversation event from 5-7:30 PM on October 17 at Lister Hill Library in the Fletcher Room on the second floor. The movie we are planning to show is the HBO documentary The Inventor - Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019), a gripping documentary that delves into the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos. Several members of the UAB community from medicine, criminology, business, engineering, and science will be present to guide discussion after the showing of the film to highlight the importance of ethics in and the relationships between all of these fields.

Confirmed discussion leaders include:

• Dr. Joel Berry - Former faculty member of Biomedical Engineering, academic scientist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Astound Research.
• Dr. Camerron Crowder - Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the UAB School of Medicine and Assistant Director of Education, Research, and Science Communication at the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute.
• Dr. O. Hayden Griffin III - Professor of Criminal Justice, criminologist, and attorney with research interests in drug policy and white-collar crime.
• Dr. Louis Justement - Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Director of the Undergraduate Immunology Program and the GBS Immunology Graduate Theme.
• Dr. Karen Scott - Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine in the Department of Clinical Pathology at the UAB School of Medicine.
• Dr. Molly Wasko - Professor and Associate Dean of Management, Information Systems, and Quantitative Methods in the UAB Collat School of Business. She is currently a Program Director at NSF in a rotator/IPA position (e.g. 2 years) and my focus is on helping academics commercialize their research.  I am in the new TIP Director, Translation Impacts Division, I-Corps program.
